Rekers more involved in Prop. 8 case than previously known Thursday, 05/27/10
Daily Kos

Think Progress also notes that Rekers is a member of a group that submitted an amicus "friend of the court" brief for Prop. 8. And this could be really huge news for the case. The New York Times talked to some legal experts about Rekers' credibility and how it affects cases he's been involved with.

EXTREMELY URGENT: Should Prop 8 Trial Be Televised? Tuesday, 01/05/10
Daily Kos

This whole episode raises the question of what the Prop 8 supporters have to hide. They haven't been shy about their vocal support for denying equality in the past. Few have faced intimidation and harassment for it.

It's more likely that their true motivation is to prevent the American people from hearing the powerful and compelling case that Boies and Olson are going to make in that courtroom. Both lawyers are expert litigants, and are pursuing a sensible Supreme Court strategy designed to swing Anthony Kennedy to join Stevens, Ginsberg, Breyer and Sotomayor to uphold the 14th Amendment and overturn Prop 8. Kennedy has made rulings favorable to LGBT rights in the past, including Lawrence v. Texas in 2003 which decriminalized sodomy.

Dobson, Prentice and the backers of Prop 8 want to hide that compelling argument from the public. They also want to hide their own anti-equality arguments from public view. In March 2009 they had Kenneth Starr argue in the California Supreme Court that voters can pass whatever they like at the ballot box, a view I label the Starr Doctrine. Such a radical idea won the day in the California Supreme Court, disappointingly enough. But in federal court, the Prop 8 backers seem to want to hide that argument from the American people.

ACTION: Help the nationwide fight for LGBT equality Wednesday, 10/28/09
Daily Kos

Many of us have focused--rightfully so--on pressuring Obama and Congress to repeal anti-equality measures such as the Defense of Marriage Act and Don't Ask, Don't Tell. But there are still important fights at the ballot box NEXT WEEK! As many of you know, Maine is ground zero--our chance to win marriage equality at the ballot box for the first time! But there are also two other issues on the ballot in November: Washington State's Referendum 71, which would preserve Domestic Partnership benefits in the state. And in Kalamazoo, MI, there is a public referendum on Ordinance 1856, which will preserve non-discrimination in housing and other areas.

We want to go three for three and send a signal that the tide has turned for equality. And below the fold, you can find out how you can help.

New Maine Marriage Polling Numbers Wednesday, 09/30/09
Daily Kos

A new public poll from Democracy Corps was released yesterday, showing us with a slight lead this race 50% to 41%, a significant jump from kos's numbers from the other week of 46-48.

The numbers are encouraging, but it's that 9% undecided that will determine this race. The investment of our supporters has allowed us to get on TV before our opponents and counter every lie they have tossed at us.

Tonight at midnight is the end of the third quarter and all of you kossacks know what that means: we will need to turn in our fundraising report.

Our campaign will be judged on the strength or weakness of this report.

Your help today is crucial to keep our campaign knocking on doors, calling voters and airing our television ads. Can we double the $4,733 raised on the Orange to Blue page?

New Study Proves this Ad Works - Watch it here and support Equality in Maine and California Tuesday, 09/22/09
Daily Kos

Yes! The focus group study of this ad by HCD Research reported the ad was considered effective by 83% of Democrats, 77% of Independents and 58% of Republicans. "Happiness" and "Inspiration" for both Democratic and Independent voters, were the most often reported reactions to the ad studied by HCD. Republicans reported feeling "Disturbed" (24%) with "Happiness" (20%) being a close second. Complete study details here.

Certainly one ad viewed one time is unlikely to change hearts and minds on such an emotional subject, but as we share this and other stories over the coming weeks time and again that is just what we will do. This debate is only won on an emotional level, and the initial study indicators were not only that the ad was deemed effective, but elicited emotional rather than intellectual responses, which means we are on target.

We need your help right now:

There are two ways to support this work directly - Contribute here to support airing this commercial in Maine

And also - Contribute here to support production of more educational spots like this for California.

The road to Marriage Equality runs through Maine Friday, 09/04/09
Daily Kos

Maine has been through statewide elections on LGBT equality issues before. In 2005, I managed the campaign against a people's veto of the new law adding sexual orientation and gender identity to our human rights act. We won 54% - 46%.

I'm a lifelong Mainer and I do believe the people of this state are inherently fair-minded. But, Markos is right:

A victory here for the forces of equality would be fantastic momentum heading into new equality battles in places like California and New York in the coming years.

Marriage Equality In Maine! We Need The Netroots! Tuesday, 08/18/09
Daily Kos

Start talking about this issue. Health Care Reform is a huge deal, but we can walk and chew gum at the same time. Start mentioning this issue to your bloggy friends and writing about it in comments, if we mobilize, if the money comes in at the start not the end, then we can defeat the forces of intolerance. Maine can be the place where we show the nation that generational change is here, and we are not going to keep judging people on the least important thing about them, who they are attracted to sexually. This is a fight we can win, but we need your help!
