Prop. 8 proponents in Perry case seek order of contempt against California Equality and ACLU over discovery dispute, and aim to expand the dispute Monday, 04/19/10
California Progress Report

Proponents now seek an order of contempt against Equality California and the ACLU for their continuing failure to produce documents subject to the March discovery orders. The March 22nd order required Proponents to assess the document production and determine, by April 12th, which documents would be relevant to enter into the case's evidentiary record. Having received no documents, Proponents contend that the evidentiary record must remain open until the No-on-8 groups produce the documents.

Judicial Candidacy of Prop 8 Mastermind's Conservative Lesbian Sister is Ended by Schwarzenegger Appointment Saturday, 04/03/10
California Progress Report

Anne Marie Schubert quietly ended her campaign early February after Judge Ken Peterson's days-earlier-than-anticipated retirement gave Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger the chance at another judicial appointment before leaving office at the end of the year. By appointing Larry Brown of the U.S. Attorney's office, a UC Davis undergraduate and law school alum, Schwarzenegger eliminated what would have been Sacramento County's first open seat on its Superior Court bench in more than a dozen years and putting Schubert in the awkward position of running a successful campaign for a seat that would not be available again for three years.

"There are different ways to become judges, but probably 90 percent are by appointments," Schubert told the California Progress Report. "It is very rare that a seat opens which is why I made the decision to run. I love my job and I am very happy where I am," Schubert told CPR to explain why she did not plan to challenge Brown in the future.

Inequality is Messy Business Friday, 07/17/09
California Progress Report

The rights of same-sex couples should not depend on whether they married before or after a particular date. Moreover, whether or not a couple is entitled to have their marriage respected by the government should not depend on whether they married before or after a certain date. We cannot have one set of laws for some Californians, and another set of laws for others. It is nonsensical that some same-sex couples are recognized as married in every respect, including their formal legal status, and others can only be given the rights and responsibilities of marriage but not the designation of "married." This is an extremely confusing and demeaning situation, and one that should make all Californians ashamed of the mess we have created in this state by denying equality to some families. We are better than this.

Conservatives Use Proposition 8 To Continue To Foster Cult of Victimhood Monday, 12/15/08
California Progress Report

Margie Christofferson is not a sympathetic figure. She is someone in deep denial of reality, who is unwilling to reconcile her relationships with her own intolerance. It's not the rest of Los Angeles's job to play along with it, to enable it, to pretend as if it doesn't exist. Doing so merely continues the decades of injustice that comes when good people do nothing and discrimination is treated as normal.
