NJ activists ready for battle over gay marriage Saturday, 08/22/09

A bill that would allow gay marriage is expected to be debated in Trenton during the lame-duck period between the Nov. 3 election and start of a new legislative session in January.

In the fall, there probably will be television and radio ads on the issue. But for now, the focus is mostly on the faithful speaking to their representatives in Trenton.

In 2006, the state Supreme Court said that committed gay couples deserved the same treatment as straight married couples. The Legislature responded by making New Jersey the third state to offer civil unions, which give the same legal benefits the state offers to married couples, but not the title of marriage.

Mass. AG sues U.S. over equal marriage Wednesday, 07/08/09

Attorney General Martha Coakley is suing the U.S. government to force it to extend a wide range of benefits to some 16,000 gay and lesbian couples legally married in Massachusetts.

Equal marriage stalls as RI lawmakers wrap up Wednesday, 07/01/09

The lack of Statehouse action on gay equality means that Rhode Island is unlikely to allow equal marriage anytime soon, despite decisions this year by lawmakers in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont joined Connecticut and Massachusetts in legalizing equal marriage.

"I was hoping the momentum that was going around New England and the support we had in the House would get enough representatives to ask for it," said Rep. Frank Ferri, D-Warwick, who is gay and sponsored same-sex marriage legislation. He and his partner wed in Canada.

Barney Frank rips prez's 'big mistake' Wednesday, 06/17/09

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, one of the nation's leading gay rights champions, blasted President Obama yesterday over a controversial anti-equal marriage court filing and is calling on the commander in chief to explain himself.

"I think the administration made a big mistake. The wording they used was inappropriate," Frank (D-Newton) said of a brief filed by Obama's Department of Justice that supported the Defense of Marriage Act.

NH Senate passes equal marriage revision; House next Wednesday, 06/03/09

As expected, the New Hampshire Senate has passed revised equal marriage legislation and sent it to the House.

If if passes there, Gov. John Lynch is expected to sign it into law later Wednesday, making New Hampshire the sixth state to allow gays to marry.

Gay marriage debate on tap in Maine House Monday, 05/04/09

The Maine House is preparing to take up a same-sex marriage bill, and its prospects are good given the number of co-sponsors and momentum from last week's Senate vote.

The bill, which won a 21-14 vote of approval in the Senate last week, goes to the House on Tuesday. The bill has more than 60 co-sponsors, most of them House members.
